Monastic settlements : Shetland 2014

Small groups of monks from the main monastic foundations in the Isles established tiny settlements in places exposed to the elements and difficult of access in order to live as hermits. The settlements are difficult to recognise on the ground today but in some cases the outlines of small oval buidings can be identified.
