July Open Studios
Much of my work incorporates pattern and line, which have played a significant part in my my creative life since early days in Northumberland, where Celtic design is very much in evidence, and where I first encountered the wonders of mediaeval illustrated manuscripts and stained glass windows. An even greater revelation occurred when I first saw the ways in which pattern was used in Abyssinian sculpture at the British Museum and adorning Greek and Roman pottery. My inspiration is drawn from what surrounds me, whether exquisite patterns in nature or in the decoration of ancient and modern ethnic artefacts, textiles and architecture.
I am largely self-taught, but for a while took design classes with Trata Drescha, a mosaicist whose work was commissioned for the rebuilt Coventry Cathedral. Since moving from South London to Chatteris in 2016 I have exhibited at the Babylon Gallery Selected Summer Art Exhibition (2017, 2018, 2019), at the Cambridge Open Art Exhibition (2018) and participated in 'Sight Lines': a four-artist exhibition at Woodditton (2019). Recently my emplhasis has shifted from the black and white of my drawings to the wonderful colours of fabrics and threads.
